Expanding grocery stores in different countries can be a difficult business. Many chains don’t have the resources to manage this.

Aldi, the German-based supermarket chain has long been pushing its boundaries beyond home. In fact, it first set foot in North America in 1973. But, even though they have over 2000 U.S. stores, Canada is still unpopulated with their discount goods.

Aldi will soon be coming to Canada, so what is the answer? An American expansion that has seen the company grow steadily might surprise some.

Is Aldi Coming To Canada In 2022?

Aldi is not planning to move to Canada and any Canadian cities by 2022. Although many experts believe the move will happen, the company has yet to make any public statements about the possibility or made any tangible moves towards expanding in Canada.

You may be asking yourself why Aldi hasn’t come to Canada. Or whether the Canadian public is willing to support the Aldi chain. Keep reading for all the details.

Why Isn’t Aldi Coming To Canada?

Aldi seems to have set its sights on the American discount market, and has ignored Canada for many reasons.

Aldi’s business model relies on the sale of low-priced foodstuffs that will keep your kitchen and pantry well-stocked.

Aldi’s prices are very competitive in America, particularly compared to smaller regional chains.

Canada has a 40 percent discount on grocery shopping, but that is only because of its budget/discount policy.

American shoppers go to Aldi, and are often impressed by the bargains, but Canadians will be more difficult to please.

  • Geography is also a reason Aldi didn’t travel to Canada. CanadianGrocer.com claims that the country has “lacks of reasonably priced real estate”.
  • Aldi cares about the placement of its stores. This includes laying out some core requirements that it considers when looking for new locations.

Aldi is committed to keeping costs down (to help shoppers), so it’s hard to picture Aldi spending a lot of money on a market they aren’t 100% certain will succeed.

Aldi follows the lead of Lidl, their main rival in Europe. Lidl went as far to establish a Mississauga headquarters, hire staff and explore possible site options.

Lidl abandoned their plans to close the office, and they fired all employees. A few years later, Lidl instead opened their first store in the U.S. Aldi could use this cautionary tale.

Do Shoppers Want Or Even Need Aldi In Canada?

Aldi’s hype machine is so effective that Canadians do not really require Aldi stores within their already-discount-focused country.

  • A shopper from the Aldi Aisle of Shame Facebook Community commented that although she is from Canada, she visits Aldi stores here in America. However, due to coronavirus closing borders, this was not possible. It was just Aldi that she visited!
  • Reddit commenter: “Desperately waiting it [Aldi] will come to Canada.”
  • Aldi Finds are likely to be a solution. Canadians are able to get cheap bread, cereal and frozen veggies. Aldi’s finds such as character pet beds, inflatable outdoor seating and exercise bikes would nevertheless be popular.

Canada: Where could Aldi build stores?

Aldi can start off by visiting the Canadian capitals of Toronto and Vancouver. Together, the cities have 10.5 millions people. Canada’s high population density means that Aldi is likely to stick with larger cities and urban centers.

  • (For your information, Canada’s population density overall is 4 people per km squared. The U.S density is 36.
  • You can read our posts to learn more about Aldi’s expansion to Las Vegas and if Aldi will be coming to Colorado.

  • Conclusion
  • Aldi won’t be visiting Canada soon and have not shown any signs that they are planning on doing so.

Aldi will need to travel to another country to be successful, particularly to Canada where there are many discount stores. However, it is possible.
