Consumers who have a tight budget should research the market before they spend their hard earned cash on meat. There is nothing more frustrating than going to a different place just to buy chicken.
Aldi’s just-the-basics-at-ultra-low prices business model has some people wondering if they really can get everything in one place, including their steaks or drumsticks.
Is Aldi Meat Good In 2022?
Aldi meat has a variety of quality depending on how it’s made. While their Black Angus beef products receive top marks from shoppers, many feel the chicken and turkey products are less than satisfactory. Aldi, however, offers fine meat selections at fair prices without having to go into a butcher.
Let’s dig a bit deeper into where Aldi gets their meat, why it’s so cheap (it’s nothing to do with quality), critiques of individual meat products, and where you might be able to get meat cheaper even than Aldi, if you’re willing to make that special trip.
Why Is Aldi Meat So Cheap?
It’s natural that we see low prices and assume low quality, but at Aldi that is not the case at all.
Aldi’s meat is affordable because everything is in it. Aldi’s business model emphasizes efficiency.
Aldi’s use of local and regional farmers for beef helps with this.
Aldi employs such methods to lower their business costs. They can then pass these savings onto customers.
Even better, the low price-points extend to specialty meats, like their organic and Never Any! lines.
Which Aldi Beef Is the Best?
The meat products that consistently receive high marks are Aldi’s USDA Choice and Black Angus beef.
USDA Choice, a U.S. Department of Agriculture designation, is used to identify meats that meet very high-quality standards. In fact, Choice’s quality is only surpassed by Prime.
Black Angus beef has been certified only if it meets certain genetic criteria and its hides have at least 51% black. These cattle are well-known for their succulent, well-marbled beef.
Aldi offers Black Angus USDA choice bottom round roasts for $4.49 per pound. Giant Eagle, a regional chain, charges $7.99 per pound. The difference in cost for similar, top-quality meat is more than three dollars per pound.
Organic, grassfed ground beef is another favorite meat option. Some people may be surprised that it even exists on supermarket shelves. Simply Nature organic beef offers incredible value for only $5.49 a pound.
Aldi’s whole chickens are organic and the bison meat is also raved about by customers.
What Aldi Meat is Worst?
Aldi’s meat is not perfect, especially if it’s a cut from a butcher.
Aldi’s chicken breasts & thighs sold under Kirkwood are one such example.
Personally, I know that such items may need to be trimmed after being unpacked.
It is very irritating, especially if your goal is to quickly get dinner on the tables.
A Redditor story that has made the rounds also cites Aldi’s ground turkey as a hassle – the shopper said she had to pick bone shards out of it.
Aldi’s ground beef can be expensive and leave budget-conscious shoppers wishing that they spent a bit more. Some complain that Aldi’s beef is overground and can leave a “mealy texture” or too crumbly.
Aldi’s ground meat is a staple in my kitchen. I have actually tried many different varieties (85/15, 95/7, 80/20) and it was not the worst.
Aldi’s won’t impress you if it isn’t your normal beef of very high quality from regional and local farmers.
Where Does Aldi Meat Come From?
Aldi gets its meats from some very surprising places, as we’ve already mentioned.
Aldi beef uses local, regional and independent cattle farmers. Aldi beef products are likely to come from nearby farms.
Not only is this a boon for small-to-midsize cattle farmers, it’s a practice that is great for the environment (and it saves Aldi money – but more on that later).
This also means that if you have ever had an issue with Aldi’s Kirkwood chicken, you were having an issue with Tyson.
Aldi source meats from other countries, like its grassfed, all-organic ground meat. But any meat from another country must state its origins on packaging.

Aldi meat can be either good or bad depending on the type you buy. But even the meat that might not fall on the “awesome” side of the scale is of a reasonably decent quality, so I don’t think you have to buy your meat elsewhere if you don’t want to.
Is Aldi’s meat safe?
The meat you get from Aldi is likely USDA Choice. It is considered the second-highest, but has lower marbling and tends to be less tender. A lower level of marbling means that there’s less flavor, and therefore more juice. Aldi is unlikely to have the finest steak if you are looking for steak.
