We were not able to test AAA batteries as closely as AA batteries. However, we did find a tie in the third place between the Panasonic Eneloop AAA Energizer Boost Universal AAA, as well as the AmazonBasics AAA Energizer Energizer Energizer Energizer Energizer recharge universal AAA. The AmazonBasics AAAs fared better than all other models but there were no notable improvements. The best option for AAA batteries is to purchase whichever one is most inexpensive.

The Panasonic Power Pack is recommended for anyone who purchases AAA or AA batteries. The pack includes the Panasonic BQCC55 rechargeable battery charger, which we highly recommend, and some of our favourite AAA and AA rechargeable batteries.
Add the price of the charger (around $25 at the time this article), and the Power Pack batteries will cost you roughly 30% less than buying batteries and a charger separately. Each of the parts is very popular so the cost of the Power Pack is not too high. The charger was our favorite and the AAA and AA batteries from Panasonic were among our best performers. This means you don’t have to compromise on quality.
How We Picked
We only used AA and AAA household batteries in this guide. However, one of our favourite battery chargers has adapters that convert AA or D batteries to C and D. For the most popular brands of AA/AA rechargeable batteries we searched AmazonBasics and Duracell as well as Walmart and Home Depot to find them. Once we had a list, the next step was to reduce it to the following:
Composition of the NiMH chemical: This is the most advanced technology available in AAA and AA rechargeable battery technologies. We required all our contenders to be made out of nickel metal Hydride (NiMH).
They are available in either four packs or eight. You should get at least twice as many batteries than you really need. That way you have enough power to charge all of them while you’re charging the rest. Once they’re fully charged, you don’t have to take them out of the charger. Since our favorite charger can handle four batteries at once, we preferred brands offering packs of eight batteries (or four, so you can easily buy two packs at once) for this guide.
Rated to survive at least 1,000 cycles. While some rechargeable batteries have a rating of hundreds of cycles, we chose to limit our selection to those with thousands-rated ratings. Remember that your battery will perform better after a few years no matter how many times you charge them. The number of rated cycles is an indication of how long the battery can last.
Labeled as “low self discharge,” “LSD”, or “pre-charged”. All rechargeable batteries have some self-discharge. This means that once they’re fully charged, they lose a bit of their charge. It doesn’t necessarily mean that a battery will be fully charged 100 percent if it isn’t. Some batteries, however, are labeled with a lower self discharge rate. This feature can cost a premium, but we require it for every model we test because we’ve found that some low self-discharge batteries are still usable after several years, as opposed to months, in storage.
Capacity rating at least 1,700mAh to AA, and 700mAh to AAA to be considered. A larger battery capacity allows you to spend more time using your remote control, lighting darkened areas with your flashlight and enjoying groovy songs on your Walkman.
No more than $3 per battery: Since rechargeable batteries aren’t something most people use every day, and you don’t get significant improvements by paying more, we set a hard price cap of $3 per battery. None of the models we considered were cheaper than $1 per battery, and most cost right around $2 per battery.
Are Rechargeable Batteries Worth It?
In most cases, yes. Rechargeable nickel-metal hydrogenide (NiMH), batteries today are leakproof and can be refilled hundreds of thousands of times. In fact, according to the New York Times , the average lifespan of popular rechargeable batteries is around four years. This means that rechargeable batteries can be purchased once in a few years to save money and time. They are also very affordable after only six charges.
Rechargeables are not the best option for every device that uses batteries. Disposable batteries are best for emergency-preparedness kits because they offer a longer shelf life than rechargeables, as the Times points out. Although rechargeables may last several years, disposables can survive up to a decade. You can just drop them into a bag so they won’t drain before you use them.
The rechargeable battery is a good option for electronics that you use every day.
