Woodworkers who are unable to work due to health conditions may find ripping boards difficult. It saves me time and effort when I need it. If you aren’t planning on resawing or ripping lots of boards, then either a hand saw or a bow saw might be the best choice.
If you just plan on ripping smaller boards, cutting curves, and doing light resawing then a smaller and lower-powered bandsaw may work for you. This JET 14-inch bandsaw, which is under 2 HP, may be suitable for your needs.
However, if you intend to rip lots of thick boards and/or resaw lumber (for veneering or bookmatching panel making, etc.), then a stronger, more powerful saw will be necessary.
Cost is another consideration. Hand tools are enough for me. I don’t require a $5,000 top-ofthe-the line bandsaw. I need a powerful bandsaw that is good at doing rough work, which I always follow up with hand tools or more precision power tools. This is the way I work with my hand saws. The handsaw is used to draw a line. I then use handplanes to work my way up using handplanes. A bandsaw is rarely used for precise work.
I had a JET-sized bandsaw, which I pictured below. I switched to a Grizzly bandsaw 4 years ago. It is much more powerful and affordable. The JET bandsaw worked fine, but just lacked the power and size that I needed. A 14-inch saw can be modified to permit resawing. But larger bandsaws (like this 17 inch one) have a stronger frame and stronger guides. They also feature a bigger cast iron table and much more power. Bandsaws with motors at least 1.75HP are required to perform substantial resawing. With a Carter Log Mill, a small bandsaw such as this can resaw boards from smaller logs. This set-up works just like a miniature bandsawmill.
My Bandsaw Of Choice. Over the years I have used a lot Grizzly brand woodworking tools. Grizzly power tools have lower prices because they are sold in higher quantities and they don’t use distributors. So, I purchased a 17-inch Grizzly G0513ANV Grizzly bandsaw. Because this machine is the black anniversary edition (and not their traditional green color) the price is lower. The bandsaw looks the same as that of the Grizzly G0513 Grizzly G0513 Grizzly G0513 Grizzly G0513 Grizzly G0513. However, it’s now orange and black. I like it.

At 2 Horse Power this bandsaw has plenty of power for me to rip through most any thickness of lumber that comes into my workshop, and has a wide 17-inch opening for when I’m cutting really wide boards. But, the reason this bandsaw attracted me to it is its ability to resaw board up 12 inches in size. This bandsaw has been more than capable of resawing. But the stock fence won’t work for resawing. It is possible to create your own resaw fencing using a thick board that has been clamped on the edge of the bandsaw table. Or you can buy a resaw fence. The resaw fencing is about $150 and provides me with great support and safety for both regular rip cuts and resawing cuts.

The quality of blades supplied with a new saw is usually poor. The blades will work well for rough ripping, but nothing more. It would be reasonable to expect that companies will spend more money on their bandsaws so customers get a great first impression. You can find better-quality band saw blades. Wood Slicer is faster than any other bandsaw blades at resawing, general ripping, and leaves far fewer marks. It can help you save a lot more time and effort. This bandsaw blade has a thinner kerf and is more durable and hardy than other blades.
Get the Wood Slicer bandsaw cutting blades online. Just choose the appropriate blade length for your bandsaw. Highland Woodworking claims that the blade is multipurpose, but suggests that you purchase a less expensive blade to rip normal wood, while keeping this beautiful blade sharp for resawing. If you also plan on cutting tight curves, then buy a blade dedicated for that purpose. Buy a skip-tooth bandsaw blade between 1/8-inch and 1/4-inch wide with 4 tpi. I’m a fan of the popular 3/16-inch / 4-tpi skip teeth bandsaw blade and have used it for years.
