The Spruce/Chloe Jeong: A very versatile tool. Bandsaws can be used to cut through wood or metal either in straight lines or in curves. Band saws are basically a looped long-blade blade running between two wheels. This allows you to use the saw for delicate jobs that would not be possible using other types of power tools. While some bandsaws can be mounted on the ground, others are portable and benchtop models.

Andrew Wilson, a contractor, and the founder of Contractor Adviserly explains that a bandsaw is essentially a long knife running between two wheels. You can use the bandsaw to cut through wood, or even metal. While it’s not as good at cutting straight lines as other saws, the band saw can be used to cut around curves. Many sizes are available but the 12-inch-to-14-inch size range is the most suitable for DIYers. The saw’s power is also important: the biggest floor-standing tools can have as much as 2-horsepower motors, but more commonly, you’ll find that a band saw with a 1-horsepower to 1.5-horsepower motor is more than sufficient. Some benchtop saws are lighter than this, though.

Here are the best band saws for a variety of uses and users.

Which are the Top 5 Uses of Bandsaws?

Bandsaws (or bandsaws) are most commonly used to make angled cuts. John Fry posted a photo on LumberJocks that shows him cutting cabriole feet with a bandsaw.

A good band saw can make curvaceous cuts as well. It is also useful for ripping lumber into smaller pieces or making precise cross cuts. A good bandsaw is actually one of the most precise cutting tools that you will find. It is possible to buy a vertical or wooden band saw as well as horizontal and benchtop bandsaws.

While it seems a bit primitive, there is a similar wheel and pulley system inside a bandsaw to what you will see in the 14-inch Grizzly.

It is the motion of the wheel that sets the blade into motion, allowing for a consistent cut. Band saws can be safer than a tablesaw because they have a downward-cutting action. This practically eliminates “kickback”, a common problem with table saws.

Many sizes are available for band saws. Benchtop or tabletop models are also known as band saws. They tend to be cheaper and take up less space if there is a tight spot.

Best Band Saws

Shopping for a Saw

By Joshua Farnsworth

A bandsaw can be described as a woodworking tool that revolves under tension around two metal wheels. The bandsaw can be used to (1) cut curves, (2) reduce boards in length and (3) resaw boards for veneer or thinner parts of furniture. This can be achieved with either a straight saw or a bow saw. But it takes much longer.

One of my students told me that he switched to all manual tools except his bandsaw. They just found the bandsaw to be a huge time & effort saver, and their bandsaw was the power tool that scared them the least. Although I enjoy using my rip handsaws for ripping a board I find it difficult to use them when there are 10-20 boards to cut. Woodworkers who are unable to work due to health conditions may find ripping boards difficult. It saves me time and effort when I need it. If you aren’t planning on resawing or ripping lots of boards, then either a hand saw or a bow saw might be the best choice.

If you just plan on ripping smaller boards, cutting curves, and doing light resawing then a smaller and lower-powered bandsaw may work for you. This JET 14-inch bandsaw, which is under 2 HP, may be suitable for your needs.

However, if you intend to rip lots of thick boards and/or resaw lumber (for veneering or bookmatching panel making, etc.), then a stronger, more powerful saw will be necessary.

Cost is another consideration. Hand tools are enough for me. I don’t require a $5,000 top-ofthe-the line bandsaw. I need a powerful bandsaw that is good at doing rough work, which I always follow up with hand tools or more precision power tools. This is the way I work with my hand saws. The handsaw is used to draw a line. I then use handplanes to work my way up using handplanes. A bandsaw is rarely used for precise work.

I had a JET-sized bandsaw, which I pictured below. I switched to a Grizzly bandsaw 4 years ago. It is much more powerful and affordable. The JET bandsaw worked fine, but just lacked the power and size that I needed. A 14-inch saw can be modified to permit resawing. But larger bandsaws (like this 17 inch one) have a stronger frame and stronger guides. They also feature a bigger cast iron table and much more power. Bandsaws with motors at least 1.75HP are required to perform substantial resawing. With a Carter Log Mill, a small bandsaw such as this can resaw boards from smaller logs. This set-up works just like a miniature bandsawmill.

My Bandsaw Of Choice. Over the years I have used a lot Grizzly brand woodworking tools. Grizzly power tools have lower prices because they are sold in higher quantities and they don’t use distributors. So, I purchased a 17-inch Grizzly G0513ANV Grizzly bandsaw. Because this machine is the black anniversary edition (and not their traditional green color) the price is lower. The bandsaw looks the same as that of the Grizzly G0513 Grizzly G0513 Grizzly G0513 Grizzly G0513 Grizzly G0513. However, it’s now orange and black. I like it.

You can buy it here with free shipping . The bandsaw was awarded the Best of Value award by a respected woodworking magazine.

At 2 Horse Power this bandsaw has plenty of power for me to rip through most any thickness of lumber that comes into my workshop, and has a wide 17-inch opening for when I’m cutting really wide boards. But, the reason this bandsaw attracted me to it is its ability to resaw board up 12 inches in size. This bandsaw has been more than capable of resawing. But the stock fence won’t work for resawing. It is possible to create your own resaw fencing using a thick board that has been clamped on the edge of the bandsaw table. Or you can buy a resaw fence. The resaw fencing is about $150 and provides me with great support and safety for both regular rip cuts and resawing cuts.

Bandsaw Blades for Sale: Which Bandsaw blades work best?

The quality of blades supplied with a new saw is usually poor. The blades will work well for rough ripping, but nothing more. It would be reasonable to expect that companies will spend more money on their bandsaws so customers get a great first impression. You can find better-quality band saw blades. You should do your research to ensure you aren’t buying a low-quality blade or spending too much on a blade that you don’t need.

If you are looking for a blade that can be used on a variety of tasks, I recommend a bandsaw blade made from carbon steel with three teeth per inch (teeth to the inch). This helps prevent clogging. A skip-tooth pattern further assists with speed and cleaner cuts, as it clogs less and has a more relaxed rake angle. You can fit a 1/2-inch blade on any size bandsaw. This includes small benchtop or larger bandsaws. You can use a bandsaw blade such as this to rip, cut joints, resaw, or for larger curves. Although a 3/4-inch resawing cutting blade can fit larger bandsaws and offer greater tracking capabilities, they do not offer any performance advantages.

Highland Woodworking’s Wood Slicer(r-resaw) Bandsaw Blade won the test. It was all 1/2 inch wide. Wood Slicer is faster than any other bandsaw blades at resawing, general ripping, and leaves far fewer marks. It can help you save a lot more time and effort. This bandsaw blade has a thinner kerf and is more durable and hardy than other blades.

Get the Wood Slicer bandsaw cutting blades online. Just choose the appropriate blade length for your bandsaw. Highland Woodworking claims that the blade is multipurpose, but suggests that you purchase a less expensive blade to rip normal wood, while keeping this beautiful blade sharp for resawing. And here’s a video about this blade:

If you also plan on cutting tight curves, then buy a blade dedicated for that purpose. Buy a skip-tooth bandsaw blade between 1/8-inch and 1/4-inch wide with 4 tpi. I’m a fan of the popular 3/16-inch / 4-tpi skip teeth bandsaw blade and have used it for years.

We have some ideas about the other available bandsaw blades.

Highland Woodworking has, my opinion, the highest value bandsaw blades. They have both their Wood Slicer (r) blades as well as General-Purpose Blades.

Timber Wolf blades for bandsaws are a popular brand, but they’re more costly than Highland woodworking.

Best Band Saws

The Best 5 Budget Band Saws

1. Grizzly G0555 Grizzly G0555 – Most Value. Latest Price. There are two schools of thought when it comes to band saws. First, the band saw should be used only for intricate work and curved contours. Second, band saws can be useful for many jobs not normally left to tablesaws.

With a tool as powerful as the Grizzly G0555 , it’s obvious that seeing a table saw as a suitable replacement for a table saw is completely realistic. It can cut through hardwood and lumber with ease thanks to its full 1 horsepower motor. And because of the constant downward thrust of the blade, you’ll never have to worry about the kickbacks that can come with a table saw.

Overall, the Grizzly G0555 is an extremely capable band saw that’s can cut boards to size just as easily as it creates detailed curves. It’s on the upper end of pricing for a budget band saw, but well worth the investment given how many other saws it can replace.

Parallel curves and three-dimensional curves are possible by marking out the profile on two adjacent sides of a blank, cutting one side freehanded and turning the workpiece 90 or 180 degrees to continue.

A fence or block can be used to make rip cuts (including those with beveled edges).

Crosscuts are made possible with the help of your miter gauge and guide fence.
