The United States Postal Service is hard at work every day in order to deliver millions upon millions of postal pieces to every address in the U.S.
Sometimes carriers must return packages to Post Office due to undeliverability, weather-related or lack thereof.
You might be wondering if you are unable to get right down to the Post Office immediately. Below is the solution to your problem.
How long will the USPS hold package in 2022
The vast majority of USPS mailing services hold packages for up to 15 business days. USPS will issue a second, final notice in every case a few days later. Packages are returned to sender within 15 days.
How can you find out whether your package has been held by USPS
U.S. Postal Service carrier attempts to deliver a package but, for whatever reason, finds they cannot, they will leave a peach-colored PS Form 3849.
The PS Form 3849 is the Delivery Notice/Reminder/Receipt, and it’s the note that there is an item waiting for you in your local Post Office.
In my experience, the postal carrier will try and leave the note right at the top of the pile so that it’s visible and not hidden among envelopes (and potentially tossed).
But what if you do accidentally miss it? It could be that you don’t remember to get your parcel.
Not to worry, because the Post Office will also issue a Second and Final Notice, generally three to five days after the first attempted delivery.
You will find the same PS Form 384, with a small box to the left that reads, “Final Notice”. This indicates that it is almost time for you to collect the parcel.
You can also enter in the space that indicates when the hold period has expired and send the package back to your return address.
A huge exception to this 15-day rule is Priority Mail Express. Priority Mail Express items only hold for five days. Second/Final notices can be issued after three working days.
How can I find where my USPS parcel is?
If there’s only one Post Office in your area, you will likely be able to find the exact address to pick up mail.
But if you’ve moved somewhere near, and that location has multiple Post Offices, you might be wondering how you find the one that is holding your package.
USPS.com explains you that there are two methods to get this information.
You will see the USPS tracking link for your parcel. This page is updated once you have received the correct tracking information.
If this isn’t convenient, please dial 1-800-ASK USPS (1 800 275-8777) to talk to a customer care representative.
What is the best way to pick up a USPS package?
Be sure to bring with you your PS Form 3849 as well as your valid photo ID. This includes a driver’s licence for some and an ID card/passport or passport for others.
Your Form may not be signed yet. They will ask that you complete it at the counter. After they verify the ID, your names and signatures are in order.
Is it possible for someone else to pick up your package from the Post Office?
The Post Office can give you permission to have someone else pick up the package.
However, the PS Form 3829 will require you to use a piece of white paper or write the following:
(Name and address of the retriever) is allowed to take my mail in order to deliver it to (Your name).
When you are done, add your signature to the little note.
How long does USPS keep packages in a PO box for?
When you have an item that doesn’t fit in your PO Box, the Post Office leaves you a notification in your box that you have a parcel to pick up at the front counter.
They will usually hold the package for 15 days. It depends on what service was used to send the item, just like a regular package hold.
What Happens When You Forget to Pick Up a Package From the Post Office
After the holding period is up, and no one has come to claim the package, USPS attempts to mail it back to the sender.
Sometimes it may be impossible to return due to the absence of a return address.
Mail could be left in these situations to go to the Dead Mail zone, which is where postal workers try find unidentified addresses and return the packages.
The good news: If you miss your holding period, there is still a chance your package can make its way to you.
It’s not a sure thing (it could be en route back to the sender), and it’s a bit of a process, but it can be done.
The package may still be with the Mail Recovery Center if it is not possible to return the parcel to its sender (one in GA, one in MN).
These packages will be scanned and, if valued at more than $25 they will remain on the shelf for an additional 60-day period. It is during this period that you can act.
To search for your package, you will need to complete a Mail Recovery Center Request.
This includes the tracking information, barcodes and package size.
You can then wait. USPS will make every effort to return your package to you.
Final thoughts: Don’t miss the 15-day window to pick up packages at your Post Office.

USPS will hold most parcels that have not been delivered for up to 15 days. USPS also informs the recipients two times about the status of any parcel they are holding for pickup at Post Office.
All you have to bring is your PS Form 3849 and a valid ID, or you can send someone else to retrieve it with a permission note and your signature.
Why are all my packages delayed 2022
Your USPS Package Tracking Information may have not been updated. There could be many factors, including inclement conditions, busy buying season, and missorted packages.
What is the reason why Usps has not updated 2022?
USPS Tracking Numbers may not be up to date due to problems such as bad weather, not scanning the package, or delivery to an incorrect address.
