But, the shipping cost to ship to the next city or state is not necessarily the same. These are USPS shipping areas.

  • What then are USPS shipping zone? This will blow your mind, if you didn’t know about them before.

What Are USPS Shipping Zones In 2022?

The United States Postal Service’s shipping zone system is a highly individualized method of determining the price of some postage and the speed of shipping for residents in an area. Based on customers’ zip codes, the zones number 1 through 9, with 1 being the closest and 9 the furthest possible destination.

  • You probably have a lot of questions now about how USPS zones work, how they affect your shipping costs, and even how to find out your own zone; well, I have answers if you just keep on reading!
  • How do USPS Zones work?

You and your friend would see completely different maps if they looked at a map showing the United States’ postal districts.

This is because while USPS shipping zones are always broken up into nine different regions, those regions are individualized based on the zip code of origin.

  • (So yes, it is possible that a zone map for two people within the same metro area, but in different zip codes, could be different.)
  • ShippingSchool.com offers a helpful breakdown of different zones.

  • Zone 1: 1-50 Miles
  • Zone 2: 51-150 miles
  • Zone 3: 151-300 miles
  • Zone 4: 301-600 Miles
  • Zone 5: 601-1100 miles
  • Zone 6: 1001-1400 Miles
  • Zone 7: 1401-1800 miles
  • Zone 8: 1801 mile or more
  • Zone 9: Freely Associated States and U.S. territories, like Guam, Puerto Rico, etc.

As a general rule, it is more costly to ship from faraway zones than you do within the same zone.

As you can see, shipping to California for somebody in Arizona would be less expensive than for someone living in Georgia.

Once you know your zone and the zone in which your mailpiece’s destination resides, you can check USPS.com’s handy price page.

Mail does not have to be shipped from the shipping zone. First-Class, USPS Marketing, Library, and Media mail ship at the same cost regardless of where it is going.

  • First-Class Package Service does not use zones shipping costs for items less than 13 ounces.
  • Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail Express and USPS Retail Ground all qualify as zoned service.

Let’s look at the Priority Mail price breakdown for an example.

Local shipping will be charged at $7.95 for a one-pound parcel.

Let’s say someone lives in Pittsburgh. Zip code 15213 is where the majority of people live. It includes Oakland campus of University of Pittsburgh.

They could send a 1-lb. parcel within the 15213 zip code, as well as to part of West Virginia, most of Western PA, and well into Ohio for that $7.95.

They also offer the fastest shipping times. If you send Priority, approximately half your area will receive delivery in less than 24 hours.

Within two working days, all recipients located in the rest of Zone 1 or 2 will receive their parcel.

Priority Mail would not be delayed for any of the Zone 1 and 2 residents, provided there are no delays.

PirateShip.com has a really useful Zone Map, which I used with the USPS.com PriorityMail Delivery Map.

The USPS.com Domestic Zone Map is also available.

How are USPS Shipping Zones Calculated

While I am unable to speak on USPS’s decision making process regarding the distances of each zone, they were calculated as radiuses within each zip code.

The map shows that you don’t see these areas as perfectly circling the earth.

The distance breakdown can be found here.

The shipping zone system has one thing that I find fascinating: some zip codes are located in the middle, such as 67460 (McPherson County Kansas).

This central location means that they are home to very few Zone 7 zones – only Maine and some zip codes in Pacific Northwest.

The vast majority of the shipping cost for these residents would be covered by Zone 6 or lower.

What does the USPS Zone Effect on Shipping Prices?

A mailpiece traveling from California to Washington, D.C. has to cover a lot more ground than, say, a mailpiece from California to Texas, so USPS charges more for some services.

Priority Mail Express, Priority Mail Express, USPS Retail Ground and Bound printed Matter are examples of zoned services.

Included: First-Class package, which is for packages 13 ounces or less

Basically, the further a mailpiece has to go, the more it will cost with these zoned services.

However, some services experience a greater price rise than others. The further you send your parcel, however.

For example, a 1-oz. The cost of a 1-ounce parcel is just $4.30 in Zones 1 or 2, but it rises to only $4.75 in Area 9.

The cost of a half-pound mailer starts at $23 in Local or Zone 1 and 2. It then rises to $46.90 Zone 9.

See the Pricing for Priority Mail packages at 70 Pounds. The maximum weight. Local + Zone 1 and 2 shipping start at $166.15.

  • To get the package to the U.S., you will need $575.20. You need $575.20 spare to get Territory (9).
  • This zoned pricing system is used by the Postal Service to charge for certain services.

If you haven’t heard, USPS does not run on taxpayer funding. Instead, USPS operates solely on its sales.

Yes, despite being an agency of the U.S. government, it is nonetheless an independent agency, with more self-regulatory power than other, fully government-funded agencies.

So if they do have to charge more for shipping further, it’s to try and remain functional for as long as possible, which is growing more difficult with each passing quarter.

What is the best way to find your USPS Postal Zone number?

With the USPS.com Domestic Zone Calculator, you can determine the zone closest to you.

Visual learners will love this PirateShip.com chart. This map gives you a colour-coded guide through each zone.

Keep in mind that there is not one zone per zip code. Instead, each zone has its own time zone. Zones can change based upon each zip code.

What are USPS International Zones (USPS)?

Use USPS international zone to determine how much mail you can send abroad.

These Price Groups are what the USPS refers to, although you might think of them in the same way as domestic areas.

However, there is one major difference: the shipping service can affect the international price range a country falls in.

Croatia’s price group 4 is if you ship via Global Express Guaranteed. Group 3 for Priority Express International.

You will find it in Group 8 under Priority Flat Rate International.

Most of the nations in the world can be described as such, they all fall into the same groupings and have different pricing points depending on how the shipping company is handled.

  • One nice aspect of international shipping via USPS is Global Express Garanted. Canada is always in Group 1.
  • As an example, let’s say you were returning to Croatia and wanted to ship a 5-lb. package via Global Express Guaranteed, that would run you $243.40.

    Priority Express International costs $97.50.

Priority Flat-Rate International places Croatia in Group 8. For items between 4.1 lbs and 20 lbs, the medium Flat-Rate Box is available. This box would run $85.

USPS International Groups work in a way that is different from domestic areas. It doesn’t matter where you’re located, USPS International Groups will still be the same.

  • Conclusion
  • USPS shipping areas are specific to every zip code in the U.S. with each zone representing a different distance from their starting point.

The larger the zone number, the further the distance, and therefore, the more expensive to ship using services like Priority Mail and Priority Express.
