How Long Will Walgreens Hold A Prescription In 2022? (Guide)
Walgreens is America’s largest drugstore chain and fills thousands every day. Due to many factors, sometimes you might be unable or unwilling to receive filled prescriptions immediately.
What Will Walgreens Keep A Prescription For In 2022?
Walgreens keeps a prescription on file for seven days. After that, two to three courtesy phone calls are made to remind customers. For controlled substances, prescriptions that have not been filled are held for up to six months and for any other medication for as long as one year.
What happens if you don’t pick up your Walgreens prescription?
Walgreens will provide you with a 7-day window to collect your prescription from the store after they have filled it.
If you don’t pick up your prescription within the specified time period, the medication will be returned to the pharmacy once it has expired.
Walgreens has a policy of seven days, but some pharmacies might keep prescriptions for more than this for special reasons.
You can use the Walgreens store locator to get the contact number of your nearby Walgreens store and ask them about their store’s policy on this.
Walgreens Reminds You To Fill Prescriptions
Walgreens has two-to three friendly calls that customers can receive to remind them to take their prescriptions into the store.
These transactions are done during the period Walgreens maintains filled prescriptions.
There are different locations that make calls, but most pharmacies will still send two courtesy messages if the prescription is not yet picked up.
Can You Get Your Prescriptions Filled After The Hold Period?
Walgreens returns prescriptions to the shelves after the 7-day period.
Walgreens is able to refill prescriptions after these periods.
Walgreens retains records for unfilled prescriptions only for a short time. If you want to call Walgreens after the record is gone, you’ll need to submit a new prescription.
How Long Does Walgreens Keep Prescription Records?
Walgreens keeps records of filled prescriptions for two years. For unfilled prescriptions however, Walgreens keeps records for only one year following the date that the prescription was written.
Unfilled prescriptions for controlled substances such as hydrocodone are not kept longer than six months from the date they were written. You can call up and inform Walgreens at any time during this period to fill your prescriptions.
Once the six-month (for controlled substances) or one-year period has passed, Walgreens removes the record for the prescription.
So if you want to get the prescription filled after that, you will have to send Walgreens a new prescription.
