15 Surprisingly Large Companies Owned By Walmart (2022)
Walmart is one the largest five corporations in the globe and it also holds a substantial number of businesses, many of them well-known subsidiary companies.
Below are 15 of Walmart’s largest subsidiaries from all over the world, and they all serve a different function for the super-sized organization that is Walmart. Each adds an additional dimension to the company’s growing success.
Walmart is spending a lot of money and energy on its need to compete with the lucrative Amazon model. From fashion to global expansion, Walmart is an always hungry machine, working towards competing in a new market against a shadowy opponent.
Walmart’s sheer size, and the fact that it is a large-scale retailer, can be overwhelming. It’s just huge. Up next, we have ten of the most well-known companies that Walmart owns, and chances are you’ve heard of most of them.
Hayneedle is an online furniture site that is well known for its cheap but stylish furniture options. I have perused the site many times, dreaming of an affordable, classic remodel for all the rooms in my house without ever realizing that Walmart owned the site.
Walmart bought Hayneedle from them in 2016, in hopes of giving them an online shop.
Walmart purchased Jet.com for 3.3 Billion dollars in 2016, similar to Hayneedle’s purchase.
Walmart was hoping that their acquisition would give them direct competition with Amazon.com.
These days, when you type Jet.com into your browser window, it will take you directly to Walmart.com since the company has absorbed the website’s ideas and style but chose to leave the domain name behind.
It was acquired in Africa for 2.54 million dollars. Massmart is the 2nd largest goods distributor in Africa and has over 420 stores in the country, selling general goods, groceries, and liquor.
Massmart includes numerous companies which specialize in African discount products, such as Massbuilders (Massdiscounters) and Massbuilders (Massbuilders). Walmarts sub-Saharan reach has been expanded through this acquisition.
Art.com, which is similar to Hayneedle in that it sells affordable wall and home decor at a reasonable price, is well-known. Art.com is, in fact, the largest online retailer of home decor and artwork.
Walmart made an unanticipated decision when it purchased Shoes.com in 2017. The website, valued at $9 million was designed to give Walmart the opportunity to market products Amazon couldn’t sell yet at deeply discounted prices.
Walmart was once more hoping that this acquisition would increase their online presence as well as improve their digital sales.
Bonobos is first on this list. This was Walmart’s move to include online fashion in their product line. Bonobos sells men’s clothes at a low price, but with high quality.
Acquired in 2017 for 310 million dollars, the brand helped Walmart on its endless journey to face off against Amazon directly on a virtual playing field.
Walmart’s desire to expand its fashion offerings did not end with men’s clothes. In the same year as Bonobos was acquired, Walmart snagged Moosejaw for $51 billion, allowing them to bring a rugged and outdoorsy aspect to their growing fashion sector.
Walmart has a favorite brand for outdoor activities like hiking, camping and backpacking.
Bare Necessities offers elegant and sophisticated products at amazingly low prices. I was surprised to discover that I could use the terms “elegant”, “sophisticated” to describe a Walmart purchase.
Walmart hopes to increase its position in comparison to Amazon by purchasing again in 2018.
Walmart recently purchased Eloquii, a plus-sized fashion company.
Elonquii retains its web identity, but not Jet.com. The Walmart relationship that Elonquii has with Elonquii allows for lower prices.
Elonquii, which Walmart also spent $100 million to acquire it for its second attempt at bringing it to the same market as Amazon. It is yet to be seen whether it will prove to be worthwhile.
Walmart created Sam’s Club in 1983 to enable it to offer discount, large-volume shopping.
Similar to Costco and BJ’s, you must have a membership to this “exclusive” club that you pay yearly in order to access the quantity discounts on offer in the giant superstore.
This is just the beginning! We’re not done yet!
Here are five of the smaller, coming up we have five of the smaller, lesser-known companies that are owned by Walmart.
The most forward-thinking and innovative purchase on this list is, by far, Aspectiva.
Based in India, this small company was purchased in 2019 with the hopes that their leadership in tech design and customer service would allow Walmart to begin getting ahead of the competition in the online and in-person marketplace.
Although Walmart did not disclose the cost of this Indian corporate gem, it is easy to see the value and wisdom in acquiring it for the Walmart family.
Amigo was an American grocery store chain that is located mainly in Puerto Rico. Walmart purchased it in 2002.
The incredibly lucrative acquisition allowed Walmart to work collaboratively with Amigo to expand their business outside of the supermarket world and include more products at steeper discounts to its customers, similar to a Super Walmart model.

Walmart plans on leveraging its access to the goods for its growth in India as well as in eCommerce.

Seiyu in Japan was the biggest supermarket chain. This acquisition made sense for Walmart.
Seiyu was originally opened in 1963. It had an established reputation among Japanese customers, which Walmart could capitalize on when it partnered with Rakuten. Walmart wanted to make Seiyu a virtual grocery and delivery company.
The company is also located in Central America and Puerto Rico.
Walmart bought Carhco in 2004. It is actually the region’s largest supermarket chain. Carhco, which is part of Walmart’s expanding global presence was well-worth the 2 Billion dollars Walmart spent.
