Protection against scratches. Properly applied car wax can help protect paint from small bits of debris, dirt, or sand. Wax acts as a shield that deflects these scratch-causing villains, helping your paint stay pristine.

Let’s start with five waxing tips
Check the labels. Some waxes need to be allowed to dry before they can haze. Other waxes do not. To get the best results, make sure you read all instructions. Your car will appreciate your efforts.
Be sure to apply it correctly. These products are not compatible with direct sunlight.
The use of circles is a bad idea. Although it might feel natural to apply wax in a circle, applying wax to the clear coat using a back and forth motion is the best method for car waxing. You can use either a machine or an old-fashioned hand tool or microfiber cloth to apply wax.
Consider a clay-bar kit. Modern cars are coated in clear coats for many reasons. Although it is personal preference, you can skip using a cleaner wax to clean your car. A clay bar kit or clay mitt set will remove any contaminants that may be present before applying wax. You will be amazed at the results.

Pre-Wax Prep
Achieving a shine that lasts is possible only with patience, diligence, perseverance, sharp eyes, and thoroughness. Here are some prep tips for getting the best results from your chosen car wax:
If you are unable to avoid direct sunlight, do not wash or wax your car.
Use a soft, clean cloth and plenty of water to wash your vehicle from top-to-bottom.
Remove road tar from the surface of your car with a solvent.
One of the clay-bar products from the top brands will gently remove any stains or smaller particles. The paint surface will feel smooth.
You might want to use an isopropyl Alcohol (IPA) cleaner if you are very particular. This will remove polishing oils and any other surface fillers. (It’s a mix of 50 percent alcohol and 50 percent distilled water.)
You can apply your choice of wax to the clear coat.

Our latest testing shows that higher-priced car wax brands may be less durable than those of lower price. We found that some liquids of moderate price scored higher than those with twice the cost.
The 19 products that were tested did not score well enough to merit an excellent rating. Some of them showed signs and symptoms of deterioration within just a few weeks.
The results also showed that pastes perform no better overall than liquids, but the highest-scoring pastes are the only waxes to receive excellent durability ratings. Both wax types had similar scores for ease of use.
Since spray-on/wipeoff has been ineffective at protecting against weather and they were difficult to evaluate, this is the first time that we have not evaluated them. You should only use them for the latest finishes.
Today’s clear-coat finishes mean that no wax can improve the appearance of a car. Regular washing is still the most important step to protecting your car’s finish. While wax is not able to protect against bird droppings or tree sap, it can be added protection for the car’s finish. There was a noticeable loss in protection after about five week for most of the products we tried. This is why we suggest waxing cars even if they are new every two to three month. Even more dramatic results can occur if your vehicle is old or has a dull finish. You can wax small imperfections in your car’s finish. Waxing may also be used to make the paint look darker or more vibrant.
But be aware that the paint finishes on some darker-colored cars can actually be damaged by some of the more abrasive waxes, which can leave swirl marks. For products with lower ratings in this category, please see our Ratings.
Which One Should You Choose?
To make waxes, you need patience, elbow grease and time. Depending on how fast you work, how thorough you are, the size of your vehicle, and the product you choose, expect to spend at least an hour to do a decent job. You can see the Types section to find out which type of product is best for you. The products will be called car waxes throughout the report. The reason we use this term is partly to make things clearer, but manufacturers often interchangeably refer to polish and wax. Both refer to products that offer a glossy, protective coating and can remove oxidation as well as embedded contaminants. The “cleaner” wax may not be as abrasive as some other products and will remove some paint.
Check the Age of Your Car. However, these waxes are best used for special occasions or weekly applications. Spray-waxing can be helpful in enhancing the vehicles’ appearance but it won’t make a significant difference to the cars that are more recent.
Waxing can help protect the car’s finish if you aren’t planning to replace it for quite some time. You may consider waxing an older vehicle or one with a grimy or oxidized finish to restore and preserve its finish. Liquid waxes proved the best in cleaning.
Pay Attention to Abrasion Waxes. Car waxes and other harsh chemicals can cause fine scratches or a cloudy finish. Vehicles with darker colors are more susceptible to scratches than those with lighter hues. Look out for products that have low scores in the scratching/hazing test if you drive a black vehicle. Abrasiveness can cause paint to appear hazy or cloudy on clear-coated surfaces. Clear-coat finish safety is usually indicated on wax packaging.
Take into account how much plastic is on your car. Some waxes may leave visible residues on porous, non-glossy plastic parts like bumpers and trim. These parts may be either black or gray and, in some cases, a lot. If that sounds like your car, choose a product that scored well in our compatibility-with-plastic tests. To get rid of wax, you may have to use commercially available cleaners.
Types
Match the car wax to your car-care needs. Three types of car wax can be used: paste, spray and liquid. Paste waxes proved to be more user-friendly than liquid waxes. The best cleaning results were achieved with liquid waxes. Spray waxes had the smallest stains, and they did not last as long.
Good for cleaning, gloss, and durability. However, they are more challenging to use evenly and smoothen out. Most will dry to a cloud within a matter of minutes, although this can be affected by the amount of sunlight and how thickly you apply them.
It is easy to use. However, the overall performance of paste waxes is less than liquids. It can also be more difficult to get the wax out of the container as it gets closer to the bottom. Most paste waxes dry in 30 seconds.
It is ideal for cars that have excellent finishes. Also for convenience, plastic compatibility, ease of use, and spot waxing. You can apply them quickly, and most of them are washable without drying. They’re not great for cleaning and have poor durability.
