How Does Walmart Track Shoplifting In 2022? (Warning…)
Walmart suffers a loss of $3 billion each year due to shoplifting. Walmart understands the importance of shoplifting and takes it seriously.
Granted, this is only 1% of its usual $300 billion revenue, this begs the question: how does Walmart track shoplifting and theft in their stores? This might surprise you.
What is Walmart’s Tracking System for Shoplifting in 2022?
Loss Prevention Associates and surveillance cameras are used by Walmart to track shoplifters. Security scanners can be found at doors starting in 2022. Walmart has also installed AI-enabled cameras at selfcheckouts that can detect whether an item was not properly scanned before being put in the bag.
Shoplifting causes Walmart huge financial losses each year. These losses are increasing with self-checkout.
Walmart now uses Everseen’s Image Recognition Technology to cut theft at self check-outs.
They are located near self-service checkouts and the cashier at over 1000 retail stores. This allows them to spot shoplifting activity with AI technology.
Cameras track objects and detect items without scanning first. A member of staff will be notified if the program is flagged.
Walmart uses Code 300 and Department 51 intercom codes, among many other things, to alert customers to shoplifting potential in-store.
What Happens If You Get Caught Shoplifting At Walmart?
Walmart quickly presses charges on shoplifters. Also, they are less likely not to drop petty-theft charges than other stores. You may end up with a criminal background that could make it hard to find work in the future.
It all depends on what the theft is worth. You can face up to a whole year imprisonment if you are caught stealing Walmart merchandise from under 16.
Walmart doesn’t have to show you the footage of shoplifting.
Walmart is allowed to press charges against the store, and they can hand the tape over as evidence to the police, but not to the shoplifter. If you want to see the tape, you probably need to get a defense lawyer.

Walmart: Does Walmart call the police for shoplifting?
Walmart calls the police for shoplifting. You will likely be taken into custody if they discover security footage from your shoplifting on barcode alarms.
If you think you may be wrongly accused shoplifting, don’t panic and get in touch with the police.
You can ask the police for information about store security. If nothing comes of that, then you may need to find an attorney. If you feel innocent, you should not sign any documents.
Walmart also reserves the right to summon the police when they see anyone trying to load pallets or dumpster diving.
What happens if you are caught at Walmart Shoplifting for the first-time?
You must return all items if your age is less than 16 and you will likely be arrested.
If you are 16 years old and have been caught shoplifting in Walmart, you may not be sent to jail. However, you may still be charged with a misdemeanor, which can remain permanently on your record.
You will also be banned from entering any Walmart Store in the future. If you get caught shoplifting again in another Walmart store, then you could be looking at jail time, a fine, or probation.
The consequences for being caught a second time are often a lot more severe, and if you are caught a third time, you will be charged with a felony, not just a misdemeanor.
